Sodium alginate structure

Sodium alginate

Sodium alginate, with the chemical formula C6H9NaO7 and CAS registry number 9005-38-3, is a compound derived from brown seaweed. This water-soluble polysaccharide is commonly used as a thickening, stabilizing, and gelling agent in various industries, including food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Sodium alginate plays a significant role in food applications, where it is utilized to improve texture, enhance mouthfeel, and create unique culinary presentations. In brewing industry as auxiliary fining agent, foam stabilizer. Its ability to form gels in the presence of calcium ions makes it particularly useful in the production of gels, films, and beads for controlled drug delivery systems in pharmaceutical formulations. Additionally, sodium alginate finds application in tissue engineering, textile printing, and wound dressings due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability. View more+

3. Use and Manufacturing
3.1 Description
Colorless or slightly yellow solid occur-ring in filamentous, granular, and powdered forms.Forms a viscous colloidal solution with water;insoluble in alcohol, ether, and chloroform. Com-bustible. Sodium alginate occurs as an odorless and tasteless, white to paleyellowish-brown colored powder.
3.2 History
Sodium alginate is a natural polysaccharide product that was first described in a patent application by the British chemist Edward C C Stanford in 1881. To this day brown algae are still the main source used to extract sodium alginate from. This group includes many of the seaweeds, like kelps, found in chilly northern seas. In addition to the food industry, the gelling properties of sodium alginate have been used in medical, dental and cosmetic applications for years.
3.3 Produe Method
Alginic acid is extracted from brown seaweed and is neutralizedwith sodium bicarbonate to form sodium alginate.
3.4 Usage

In brewing industry as auxiliary fining agent, foam stabilizer.

4. Safety and Handling
4.1 Exposure Standards and Regulations
Substance added directly to human food affirmed as generally recognized as safe (GRAS).
Sodium alginate used as a stabilizer in animal drugs, feeds, and related products is generally recognized as safe when used in accordance with good manufacturing or feeding practice.
4.2 DisposalMethods
SRP: The most favorable course of action is to use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational exposure or environmental contamination. Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air quality; potential migration in soil or water; effects on animal, aquatic, and plant life; and conformance with environmental and public health regulations.
4.3 FirePotential
COMBUSTIBLE
4.4 Safety Profile
Poison by intravenous and intraperitoneal routes. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Na2O
4.5 Formulations/Preparations
It consists chiefly of sodium salt of alginic acid, polyuronic acid composed of beta D-mannuronic acid residues linked so that carboxyl group of each unit is free while aldehyde group is shielded by glycosidic linkage.
All derivatives of alginic acid ... designated by the generic term algin. ... Most commonly used algin compound is sodium alginate ... often used interchangeably.
Trade names include Alginate, SFC; Cecalgum, Sanofi; Dialgin, Diamalt; Keltex, Kelco; Lamitex, Protan; Manutex, Kelco.
Dental alginates are powder mixtures with the following composition: sodium alginate (10 ? 20 wt %), calcium sulfate (10 wt %), trisodium phosphate (1 ? 4 wt %), diatomite (70 ? 80 wt %), color and flavor (1 ? 2 wt %).
4.6 Incompatibilities
Sodium alginate is incompatible with acridine derivatives, crystalviolet, phenylmercuric acetate and nitrate, calcium salts, heavymetals, and ethanol in concentrations greater than 5%. Lowconcentrations of electrolytes cause an increase in viscosity but highelectrolyte concentrations cause salting-out of sodium alginate;salting-out occurs if more than 4% of sodium chloride is present.

A gelling polysaccharide extracted from giant brown seaweed, it is useful in viscosity studiesAlginic acid sodium salt is widely utilized in the food industry as flavorless gum which enhances viscosity and acts as an emulsifier. It finds application as a thickener for reactive dyestuffs which is used in textile screen printing and carpet jet-printing. It is used as indigestion tablets and for the preparation of dental impressions. As a polymer, it combines with chitosan to synthesize a biodegradable porous scaffold which is useful for tissue engineering applications. It acts as a food additive and is used in production of gel-like foods such as baking. It is also used for encapsulating agents of microparticles of beta-galactosidae and in the preparation of alginate hydrogels with tunable mechanical properties.

Usage
It is a hematologic agent, drug that acts on blood and blood-forming organs and those that affect the hemostatic system. sodium alginate has been used in warp sizing, packing and printing. In printing, it is an ideal kind of material with wide applications in the cotton, wool, silk and synthetic fiber. Sodium alginate is widely used in food industry such as it is the main material of seaweed, synthetic grape and synthetic cherry, it is taken as a stabilizer of ice cream and ice cream bar because of its dense organization and slow solution speed. It is also the main material of the dainty cold powder and jelly, As a stabilizer of cake (such as cookies, bread, fine dried noodle, chocolates) and a polish of bread, sodium alginate can keep the cookies sweet-smelling and avoid falling to pieces, and make the noodle smooth and reduce breaking ratio of noodle and fragmentation of bread. Sodium alginate is also a good thickener of jam, chili sauce, jelly, tomato ketchup, fishpaste, pudding and salad flavoring.
