3. Use and Manufacturing
3.1 Description
Red crystals. Insoluble in water and ammonia; soluble in acids. The cobalt carbonate of commerce is usually thebasic salt (see following entry). This occurs naturally as sphaerocobaltite. It can be precipitatedas the violet-red hexahydrate CoCO3. 6H2O from aqueous solutions of cobalt(II) salts andan alkali metal bicarbonate if the reaction is carried out under an atmosphere of carbondioxide. In the absence of carbon dioxide basic salts are precipitated in these reactions. The hydrate is de

4. Safety and Handling
4.1 Exposure Standards and Regulations
Trace minerals added to animal feeds. These substances added to animal feeds as nutritional dietary supplements are generally recognized as safe when added at levels consistent with good feeding practice. All substances listed may be in anhydrous or hydrated form. Cobalt carbonate is included on this list.
4.2 DisposalMethods
SRP: The most favorable course of action is to use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational exposure or environmental contamination. Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air quality; potential migration in soil or water; effects on animal, aquatic, and plant life; and conformance with environmental and public health regulations.
4.3 Formulations/Preparations
-325 mesh, 99.5% purity grade; powder grades; technical grade
4.4 Reactivities and Incompatibilities
Oxidized by air or weak oxidizing agents to cobaltic carbonate.
Does not react with cold concentrated /nitric acid/ or /hydrochloric acid/; when heated, dissolves with evolution of /carbon dioxide/.
