Cyprodinil, with the chemical name N-(4-methyl-6-propylpyrimidin-2-yl)aniline, is a beige powder with a slight odor. It has a melting point of 75.9℃ and a relative density of 1.21 (20℃). The vapor pressure is 5.1×10-4Pa (crystal A) and 4.7×10-4Pa (crystal B) (25℃). The octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow) is 3.9 (pH 5), 4.0 (pH 7), and 4.0 (pH 9) (25℃). The solubility (g/L, 25℃) is 0.02 (pH 5), 0.013 (pH 7), and 0.015 (pH 9) in water; 160 in ethanol, 610 in acetone, 440 in toluene, 26 in n-hexane, and 140 in n-octanol. It is stable and hydrolytically stable with a half-life (DT50) of more than 1 year (pH 4-9, 25℃). The photodegradation DT50 in water is 5-30 days.
Cyprodinil inhibits the biosynthesis of amino acids and the activity of hydrolytic enzymes in fungal cells, disrupts the fungal life cycle, inhibits fungal penetration, and hinders the growth of fungal mycelium in plants. It has excellent control effects on gray mold and leaf spot diseases caused by Botrytis cinerea and Mycosphaerella spp.
Cyprodinil is an effective systemic fungicide with both curative and protective effects. It shows outstanding efficacy against gray mold in crops such as grapes, strawberries, cucumbers, and tomatoes, as well as leaf spot diseases, black spot, and brown rot in apple and pear trees, net blotch and leaf blight in barley and wheat. It also provides certain control against powdery mildew and black spot caused by Venturia spp.
Cyprodinil, developed by Syngenta Crop Protection AG, Switzerland, is registered in multiple countries including South Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, and Portugal.
Table 1: Cyprodinil registration status in foreign countries
According to the China Pesticide Information Network, as of July 2021, Cyprodinil has been officially registered in China with a total of 28 products, including 4 technical materials, 11 single formulations, and 13 compound formulations. See the table below for details.
Table 2: Cyprodinil registration status in China
Cyprodinil compound patent number: CN1017993B; Patent title: Preparation method of aniline pyrimidine derivatives; Patent application date: September 28, 1988. Patent holder: Syngenta Participations AG; Other patents: CN1032441A.
Cyprodinil has both protective and curative activities, and it is systemic in plants, being absorbed, translocated, and distributed. It has excellent rainfastness and can control a wide range of diseases, with the best efficacy against gray mold and leaf spot diseases. Cyprodinil has a novel mode of action and no cross-resistance with other known fungicides, making it suitable for integrated disease management and control of pathogens resistant to commonly used fungicides.
Cyprodinil does not exhibit cross-resistance with triazoles, imidazoles, morpholines, or phenylpyrroles. Its combination formulations are worth attention and research by companies.
